Secondary Containment
Coatings and SYSTEMS

When secondary containment coatings are required to keep hazardous materials and chemicals from the environment, it is necessary to partner with a contractor that has the experience selecting and applying the proper linings.

Secondary Containment Services

Conomos offers secondary containment coating services. Our experienced crews have successfully performed a number of secondary containment projects and we recognize the importance of keeping chemicals and other hazardous materials from escaping into the environment. We are available to help facilitate discussions with the coatings manufacturers in order to select the proper coatings system for your secondary containment structure. This will help to ensure the coatings system’s compatibility with the materials being stored. Once the proper coatings are selected, our crews have the ability to skillfully apply.

Types of Secondary Containment Coatings

EPOXY

Epoxy coatings are typically used to protect secondary containment systems. Epoxies have the ability to resist most chemicals in immersion type service. There are a number of different epoxy coating systems based on the type and contents of the chemicals being stored.

Vinyl Ester

Vinyl Ester coatings have the ability to resist the most corrosive chemicals including acids and alkalis. The secondary containment system must have the capability to sustain both the chemical attack and other operations type factors.

Factors which affect the containment system selection are: the type and concentration of the stored material and the typical environmental exposure of the area (i.e. indoor/outdoor, normal foot traffic, forklift/small utility vehicle traffic and heavy truck traffic).

What is secondary containment?

Secondary containment can most easily be thought of as a backup plan to prevent hazardous chemicals and waste from being released into the waterways, ground or environment.  This is done by providing an additional protective barrier to the surface of an otherwise corrosion prone material (e.g. concrete).   There is a need to protect people, wildlife, plants and the atmosphere from this hazardous waste and many new regulations and legislation surrounding the need to mitigate risk of an accident.  Protecting concrete with a lining or chemical resistant coating is an economical way to protect these structures and your company assets.

An example of containment would be a storage tank.  An example of secondary containment would be a base under layer to the storage tank that is designed to contain any leaks and spills from the tank it surrounds.

Industrial facilities inevitably have secondary containment systems since they need to plan for situations where equipment connections/seals leak and accidents may occur.  In the US, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) outlines the need for containment and secondary containment in the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) – Title 40 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 264.   The types of hazardous materials laws and regulations are defined and administered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in the US.

Conomos performed the painting on the Cooper River Bridge (Ravennel Bridge) in Charleston for me a few years back and I highly recommend their firm. They did an excellent job for us on an extremely difficult project and have proven to be a most reputable and fair company.

Certifications & Operator Qualifications

As an SSPC certified contractor, we at Conomos will provide you with the confidence that your secondary containment project will be completed to the highest levels of your expectations.

With Conomos, you can expect quality, safety, and on-time performance. Conomos prioritizes the training of our workforce and staying current with the necessary industry certifications, including SSPC and NACE.  We also can accommodate customer specific operator qualifications and safety training. These operator qualifications are managed through different software such as ISNetworld and Veriforce.

Secondary Containment Applications

The main applications for secondary containment coating are spill containment and secondary containment lining systems.  Secondary containment lining systems are a coating system that has the ability to protect the containment material (typically concrete) from deterioration due to the vessels stored contents and the ability to seal the containment structure’s various construction details (i.e. joints).  This prevents the escape of the stored materials into the environment.

Our extensive experience includes working with companies from a wide range of industries
